The Book That Opened My Eyes To Making Money

In the days leading up to Christmas 2005 I finished reading a remarkable (yet unheralded) little book that opened my eyes to what making money is really all about.

And its content is not what you might think.

It contains no highfalutin strategies, no mesmerizing theory, no razzmatazz; just plain common sense in small but effective doses.

I picked up the tome out of interest, not specifically to learn how to make money, but I must confess that even this early its innate wisdom is starting to take root in my mind and I find myself being directed to develop additional streams of incremental income from what I already do to make money.

What this little book did for me was to ask questions that forced me to think outside the box and challenge limiting beliefs; replacing them with new, empowering thought patterns that will help me chase prosperity in directions with which I am already familiar.

The book captivated me from the very start because is it practical, inspiring and motivating.

It makes me realize that making money is not such a hard job at all and it demonstrates that no matter what you are doing or where you are, you can always find ways to make money.

In essence, this little book focuses on developing the correct mindset regarding money.

Okay, so there is no earth-shattering revelation in that premise because we all know that successful wealthy people are those who have a strong wealth psychology to attract more money in their life.

However, go about matters in the wrong way and all you manage to achieve is shooting yourself in the foot and sabotaging your dreams.

I’m glad I found this little book, I’m glad I read it, and now I intend to pursue the insights it has provided me on the prospects of enhancing my financial standing.

How to Talk Your Way Out of Trouble at a Major Book Signing Event

What do you do at a major book signing event when you are confronted with a nervous client, an inflamed public relations consultancy – and 500 copies of some other author’s book instead of your own?

You may have read my recent post on how I received an invitation out of the blue to address a targeted audience of 500 newly-retired couples and engage thereafter in a book signing ceremony.

It sounds too good to be true and it almost turned out that way.

I arrived at the venue to be informed that my books had failed to show.

Oh, 500 hundred copies of a book had arrived okay, but not my book “Your Retirement Masterplan” (How To Books ISBN 1857039874).

Someone at the distribution warehouse had highlighted the wrong ISBN, clicked the mouse button, and provided their dispatch department with erroneous delivery details.

So what do you do when you are confronted with a nervous client, an inflamed public relations consultancy – and 500 copies of some other author’s book?

I recalled the gist of a chapter in my own tutorial http://1st-creative-writing-course.com which held me in good stead as I proceeded to…

- Assuage the client and their PR representatives and assure them that events would pan out satisfactorily;

- Request permission to re-jig the program and tag a 30-minute Q & A session onto the end of my talk;

- Telephone the warehouse and demand they courier PDQ 500 hundred copies of the correct book (fortuitously, the warehouse was only 25 miles away from the venue).

As it happens, the Q&A session went down a bundle with the audience and lasted for almost 60 minutes which was just as well because that’s when the copies of my book arrived.

Hardly a JIT delivery but welcome nonetheless.

What goes around come around and all in all I was pleased with the day’s work - and I got what I set out to achieve.

1. I had earned 10 percent in royalties from the bulk book purchase

2. I got to sign 500 copies individually for the attendees

3. I got the opportunity to pass around my business cards

4. I got to address the retirees in a 20-minute talk on the third age adventure with the added bonus of a 1 hour Q&A session.

5. I got the opportunity to promote my next book “How to Earn Money in Retirement” (due for publication in April 2006 by How To Books ISBN 1845281128)

6. I got 500 potential new customers for all my future books

7. I got an all-expenses paid trip to the venue

8. I got a substantial appearance fee

9. I got exposure from local television covering the event

Best of all to come out of the potential crisis was the fact that I won the trust of both the client and the consultancy and ended up with an invitation to repeat the exercise (minus the wrong books factor) on four separate occasions during 2006.

What helped me talk my way out of trouble at this major book signing event is the fact that I spent the bulk of my working life at the sharp end of marketing and I had seen it all before – and worse.

My New Book Was Inspired By a Master Metaphysician

You are probably already aware of Vernon Howard, master metaphysician and master wordsmith; you may even have read some of his books.

The collected works of this great man have been a constant source of motivation for me personally over the past 40 years, and he is the inspiration for my new book “Maximizing Mind Power to Enrich Retirement” (not due for publication until 2007 because I have two in the queue before it…)

From 1965 until his death in 1992 Vernon Howard wrote many books and conducted classes which reflect a degree of skill and understanding that may be unsurpassed in modern history. The American journal Human Behavior Magazine said of him, “Vernon is probably the clearest writer on these subjects in the English language.”

His warmth and refreshing sense of humor made him a delightful subject for interviews, talk shows and articles.

In 1983 Michael Benner of station KLOS in Los Angeles, California said, “Vernon Howard is one of the most powerful speakers I have ever interviewed; he has an uncanny ability to cut through the fluff and puff and jolt people into seeing who they really are. At times humorous and gentle, at other times demanding and forceful. Vernon Howard holds the record for generating responses to our KLOS talk shows. Not everyone likes his message but I can’t imagine anyone turning him off.”

Today more than 7 million readers worldwide enjoy his exceptionally clear and inspiring presentations of the great truths of the ages. Libraries, bookstores, health food stores and church bookshops all over the world sell Vernon Howard books, booklets, cassette tapes and videotapes. His material is widely used by doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, clergymen, counselors, educators and people from all walks of life.

Incredibly, the only topic Vernon Howard ever wrote about was the higher self and the way out of the human problem he discovered was an in-depth appreciation of the vital difference between the two selves of the psyche.

For 25 years before engaging in public instruction Vernon studied every published work on every know mystic, immersed himself in the teachings of every known religion and persuasion, and eventually arrived at a single conviction: without exception they all focused on the higher self and how to access it.

The moral for aspiring authors…

Find yourself a mentor from ages past; a master wordsmith to guide and inspire you, to lift your writing output several stanzas above the norm.

How My First Published Work Almost Hit the Dump Truck

My first published work (and coincidentally my first bestseller) came about by way of accident.

What do I mean by that?

Just this… I didn’t set out to write a book

I was sitting at home one evening in December 1993 completing a review of the meticulous notes I had compiled in the lead up to launching a new business.

As I closed the ring binder and prepared to consign my accumulated data to the dump truck I stopped in my tracks.

Hey, I thought, there’s book in here somewhere, there’s an extra income opportunity, there’s an opening to make money from writing, there’s a way to create a residual income stream, and what’s more, I can earn all of this extra income at home.

Busy though I was in the early days of my new enterprise I set about my extra income idea by drawing up a plan of action to transcribe the recorded research into a how-to or self-help manual for the benefit of others about to embark upon what I had just achieved.

This inspiration to earn extra income at home could only be accomplished in my spare time (what little there was of it) but because the material was in both date and chronological order I started out with a valuable edge.

How to structure the text though, how to convert my expertise into a meaningful volume, how to develop its presentation into a format that would appeal to the publishing industry, how in fact to locate a publisher: these were some of my dilemmas in my plan to earn extra income at home.

Five months later I put the finishing touches to my first draft and sent copies off to four niche publishing houses (something I’ve never done since nor would ever do again because it’s bad form) and to my astonishment received two offers of intent of interest to pursue the project.

I appeared to have hit the jackpot and I wondered why

It didn’t take me long to figure that out. Happily, my text coincided with the emergence in the early 1990s of world wide government initiatives to stimulate indigenous economic growth by encouraging start-ups in the area of small to medium size business enterprises.

I decided to opt for one of these offers of publication which proved fortuitous because I was immediately teamed up with a highly experienced commissioning editor who taught me how to craft my raw text into what had been concerning me all along: the production of a meaningful volume.

“Starting Your Own Business” was published in October 1995, sold out of its first edition in December of that year, and was reprinted in January 1996.

It has gone from strength to strength ever since and disposals continue to rise year-on-year justifying my plan to earn extra income at home.

As I write this piece in November, 2005, “Starting Your Own Business” (now in its 4th edition and heading for its 5th) Ranks at No.10 out of 872 competitive titles on Amazon.co.uk…

I tell you all of this not to impress but to let you in on the secret of how my tutorial “Secrets to Churning Out Bestsellers” came into being.

Subsequent success in writing for profit in my spare time prompted me to delve deeply into the reasons why my work always seems to be on target.

It couldn’t all be down to luck. Sure, serendipity stepped in at the outset but there had to be more to it than that.

I began to evaluate what I was doing right, where I was going wrong on occasion, what I thought I knew and what I had still to learn from my peers.

The result of my painstaking research is “Secrets to Churning Out Bestsellers”. This creative writing course encapsulates the power-packed tried and tested strategies that work for me and other accomplished niche non-fiction authors; strategies that will work just as well for you.

Where to Look for Your Next Writing Project When You're Stuck for Ideas

When my first book “Starting Your Own Business” was published way back in 1995, I thought that was it. I reckoned I’d never write another one.

But I was wrong

This book has enjoyed many reprints, multiple editions, and proceeded over the years to generate another seven disparate titles from the same topic.

Two years ago I completed the first draft manuscript for a commemorative 4th edition marking a decade in print.

It was accepted by the publisher and hit wide bookshelves in the autumn of 2005.

With updated content and several topical new chapters added, the ball
started rolling all over again and in the process attracted a new breed of readers.

With that project out of the way, I was stumped where to look for the next.

I dug deep within myself and asked what else do I know about?

I know how to start, manage and expand small businesses; I know about advising anyone on how to run an internet business from home, shop or office;
I know how to instruct others on the subject of writing for profit, but what else do I know?

Then it dawned on me…

I also know how to enjoy a rewarding and fulfilling retirement.

And so I embarked on my new task, researched the topic, completed the text, submitted a proposal, and as a result “Your Retirement Masterplan” (ISBN 1857039874) was published in October 2004, became an instant bestseller, and one year on is still ranking at No.2 out of 3356 competitive titles on Amazon.co.uk.

But I didn’t let the matter rest there

I set about drafting a fresh proposal for a sequel “How to Earn Money in Retirement”.

It too was accepted for publication in April 2006 by How To Books (ISBN 1845281128).

And so it goes on…

Ongoing success in having my proposals accepted prompted me to pursue another topic that has been close to my heart for many years: mindpower.

The problem was I could never find a proven niche into which I could fit it with a reasonable chance of publication – but now I had discovered the perfect fit.

My proposal for “Maximizing Mindpower to Enrich Your Retirement” has just been accepted by the same publisher and will be available online and offline during the second quarter of 2007.

The moral is persistence…

Dig deep within yourself. You know much more than you think you know.

If you have been struggling to break into authorship, take heart…

Persist and you will succeed.

Marketing Your Books Can Be Fun And Profit Making

Marketing your writing output can be fun, exciting, creative and profitable.

It can also prove very frustrating and expensive if you do not know how to evaluate cost effective methods of viral marketing - offline and online.

Over the years people have come to know me for my ability to develop low cost and no cost strategies for marketing and promoting a business, product or service; strategies that have realized handsome returns over the years.

Here is a recent example of what I mean…

Just as I was checking the proofs for my next book “How to Earn Money in Retirement”
I received a telephone call from a leading London PR consultancy inviting me to address 500 newly-retired couples at a seminar to be held in Essex, England, on Thursday 24 November; all potential customers of their client the world wide builder Bryant Homes.

The invitation came my way because the first book in this series “Your Retirement Masterplan” is a runaway bestseller (No.2 on Amazon.com out of 3157 competitive titles) and also because one of the partners in the consultancy chanced to hear me speak in a recent BBC radio interview.

So what do I get out of this unique marketing opportunity?

The client buys 500 copies of “Your Retirement Masterplan”

I earn 10 percent in royalties from this bulk book purchase

I get to sign 500 copies individually

I get the opportunity to pass around my business cards

I get to address the retirees in a 20-minute talk on the third age adventure

I get the opportunity to promote my next book

I get 500 potential new customers for my future books

I get an all-expenses paid trip to the venue

I get a substantial appearance fee

I get exposure from local television covering the seminar

This is the quintessence of viral marketing and not only does it cost me nothing, I also make a profit out of the deal.

Put on your thinking cap and come up with examples of similar ways you could market your produce for free and make money at the same time.

My System Works Even Better When You Apply It To Real Websites

Enthused by the results of my spoof experiment I then applied my system to two of my real websites and you can check out for yourself what happened this time...

Go to bt.yahoo.com and enter ‘how to products’ in the search box and you will find that http://howtoproducts-xl.com ranks at No.1 out of 1,850,000,000 competitive pages (yes, one billion, 850 million).

Go to Google.com and enter ‘writing for profit’ in the search box and you will find that http://www.writing-for-profit.com ranks at No.1 out of 44,900,000 competitive pages.

What I achieved…

So too can you for your own websites if you follow the simple instructions that accompany the tool.

How a Spoof Website Grabbed 3217 Email Addresses in a Matter of Weeks

The crazy notion rattling around in a disordered dream finally forced me out of bed at 2.45am. I staggered to my computer, knocked out a sketchy to-do list, and crawled back bleary-eyed to my pit.

Six hours later I set about my task and here is what I did…

First I checked in at searchenginewatch.com to review the most popular keywords of the day.

Then I visited Google Zeitgeist where an unlikely keyword phrase was ranking at No.2 in the Top 15.

Next I wrapped some text around the keyword phrase, peppered it with a few similar keywords; enough text in all to form a mini web page.

Now I set up a spoof site and tagged it to an existing URL.

I broke up the text with a form; compliments of responders.com

I injected some magic into the Meta tags to lure the spiders.

Finally I committed my page to the tender mercies of a battery of search engines.

Ten days on and here is what was happening…

The site had an Alexa ranking of 198.

It had captured the No.1 Spot for the core keyword phrase on Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, Lycos and Ask Jeeves.

My hosting service traffic stats reported 18,945 visitors.

The form had grabbed 3217 email addresses.

Some little time later I pulled down my temporary web page, putting an end to the quality of exposure most marketers would bite their own ass to achieve.

Who needs an inbox choked with a bucket load of subscriptions to a hypothetical newsletter linked to an unidentified product, the development of which (given the keyword phrase) Einstein would have hard put to get his head around…

Why did a crazy notion prompt me to do all this?

I was testing out a new system that claims it can seduce the spiders to visit ANY website.

What is the system?

You can read about it if you wish by visiting this website http://websiteoptimization.howtoproducts-xl.com/
